डॉ. इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय हिन्दी के समकालीन साहित्यकार हैं। इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय जर्मनी के फ्रैंकफुर्त नगर में स्थित जॉन वौल्फ़गॉग गोएटे विश्वविद्यालय के भारतीय भाषा विभाग से 1989 में अवकाश प्राप्त प्राध्यापक हैं। 90 वर्ष की आयु में भी डॉ. पाण्डेय की सक्रियता में कोई कमी नहीं है। वर्तमान में वे ‘नागरी प्रचारिणी सभा’ तथा ‘भारतीय पी.ई.एन.’ के स्थाई सदस्य हैं।
जीवन परिचय
डॉ. इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय का जन्म 4 अगस्त, 1924 को उत्तर प्रदेश के ज़िला रायबरेली में ग्राम गेगासों शिवपुरी के पं. शम्भू रतन पाण्डेय तथा शुभद्रा पाण्डेय के घर हुआ। गाँव की पाठशाला से प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद बालक इन्दु प्रकाश परिवार के साथ कासगंज, अजमेर,माउंट आबू और रायबरेली रहे और इन्हीं स्थानों पर रह कर माध्यमिक शिक्षा प्राप्त की। रायबरेली से 1943 में हाईस्कूल की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की। इसी साल महात्मा गाँधी द्वारा शुरू किए गए भारत छोड़ो आन्दोलन में सक्रिय भाग लिया और गिरफ्तार होकर जेल में रहे। यही वर्ष इन्दु प्रकाश के जीवन में भारी मोड़ लाने वाला वर्ष था, जब परिवार के दबाब में उन्हें अनिच्छापूर्वक विवाह करना पडा। हाइडी पांडेय ने धर्मपत्नी के रूप में उनके जीवन में प्रवेश लिया जो कालान्तर में उनके तीन बेटों पुरुषोत्तम, कैलाश और अविनाश की माँ बनीं। विवाह के बाद इन्दुजी इण्टरमीडिएट की शिक्षा के लिए कानपुर गए और बी.एन.एस.डी. कॉलेज से 1945 में इण्टरमीडिएट की परीक्षा पास की। फिर वे उच्च शिक्षा के लिए इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय में प्रविष्ट हुए। वहाँ से 1947 में बी.ए. की उपाधि हिन्दी व अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य तथा राजनीति शास्त्र विषय लेकर प्राप्त की। 1949 में उन्होंने इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय से ही हिन्दी साहित्य में एम. ए. की उपाधि प्राप्त की।

तत्कालीन स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के महानायक महात्मा गाँधी से अत्यधिक प्रभावित होने के कारण इन्दु प्रकाश 1946-47 में गाँधी आश्रम सेवापुरी, वाराणसी में रहे और वहाँ जे. सी. कुमारप्पा से उन्होंने ‘गाँधियन अर्थशास्त्र सीखा। प्रो. धवन ने उन्हें ‘गाँधियन राजनीति दर्शन’ का ज्ञान प्राप्त कराया। यह वही समय था जब इन्दु प्रकाश आचार्य जे. बी. कृपलानी, धीरेन्द्र भाई मजूमदार और प्रो. आसरानी के सम्पर्क में भी आए। फिर इलाहाबाद वापस आकर ‘रचनात्मक परिषद ’ की स्थापना की और गाँधीवादी रीति से जीवनयापन को लक्ष्य बनाया। तत्कालीन सभी महत्वपूर्ण गाँधीवादी विचारक नेता उस परिषद् में आए और उन लोगों ने परिषद् के सदस्यों के साथ चर्खा कताई और विचार-विमर्श किए। उन्हीं दिनों इन्दुजी ने भाई सालिगराम से प्रौढ़ शिक्षा का प्रशिक्षण लिया और अनेक गाँवों में प्रौढ़ शिक्षा की कक्षाएँ भी चलाईं।
कार्यक्षेत्र
शैक्षणिक योग्यता बढ़ाने के क्रम में बाद में इन्दुजी ने 1955 में पुणे के दक्षिण कॉलेज द्वारा आयोजित ‘समर और ऑटम स्कूल ऑफ़ लिंग्विस्टिक्स’ में भाग लेकर भाषाशास्त्र की अनेक नवीन विधाओं का अध्ययन किया। 1974 में उन्हें हॉलैण्ड के उटरैष्ट विश्वविद्यालय से उनकी पुस्तक ‘रीजनलिज़्म इन हिन्दी नॉवल्स’ पर डी. लिट्. की उपाधि प्राप्त हुई। सीखने के इस क्रम में, विद्याव्यसनी इन्दु प्रकाश जी ने अपनी मातृभाषा अवधी के अतिरिक्त हिन्दी, ब्रजभाषा, भोजपुरी का ज्ञान प्राप्त किया तथा उर्दू, गुजराती और मराठी भाषाएँ भी सीखीं। इन भाषाओं की पुस्तकों का अध्ययन किया और अनुक पुस्तकों की समीक्षाएँ भी लिखीं। विदेशी भाषाओं में वे अंग्रेज़ी और जर्मन का अच्छी तरह उपयोग कर लेते हैं। प्रयोग न करते रहने के कारण अब रूमैनियन भाषा पर उनका अधिकार नहीं रहा पर बातचीत करने में उन्हें अब भी कोई कठिनाई अनुभव नहीं होती। एम. ए. करने के तुरन्त बाद उसी वर्ष इन्दु प्रकाश जी ने मुम्बई विश्वविद्यालय के अंतर्गत एलफिन्स्टन कॉलेज के हिन्दी भाषा एवं साहित्य विभाग में प्राध्यापक के रूप में अपने शिक्षक जीवन की शुरुआत की। जुलाई 1949 से तीन वर्षों तक विभाग में प्राध्यापक रहने के बाद वे जून 1963 तक वहीं विभागाध्यक्ष के रूप में कार्यरत रहे। 1963 में हाइडेलबर्ग विश्वविद्यालय, जर्मनी के आमंत्रण पर इन्दु जी वहाँ के दक्षिण एशिया संस्थान में एक वर्ष के लिए भाषा, साहित्य एवं भारतीय संस्कृति का अध्यापन करने के लिए गए। वहाँ वे 1963-64 में रहे। 1964 में इन्दु जी को राजकीय विश्वविद्यालय, कैलीफ़ोर्निया के बर्कले केन्द्र से आमंत्रण मिला। वे एक वर्ष के लिए जुलाई 1964 से 1965 तक, हिन्दी भाषा, भारतीय साहित्य, भारतीय दर्शन एवं संस्कृति का अध्यापन करने के लिए अमेरिका में रहे। भारत सरकार के शिक्षा एवं संस्कृति मंत्रालय ने अपने प्रतिनिधि के रूप में पाण्डेय जी को रूमानिया के बुखारेस्ट विश्वविद्यालय में दो वर्षों के लिए भेजा। वे वहाँ सितम्बर 1965 से सितम्बर 1967 तक रहे। एक बार फिर वे जर्मनी लौटे और 5 नवम्बर 1967 से अगस्त 1989 तक जर्मनी के फ्रैंकफुर्त के गोएटे विश्वविद्यालय में भारतीय भाषाशास्त्र विभाग में प्राध्यापक नियुक्त हुए। यहीं से 65 वर्ष की उम्र में अगस्त 1989 में पाण्डेय जी ने अवकाश ग्रहण किया।
साहित्यिक परिचय
अपने अध्यापक जीवन के दौरान डॉ. पाण्डेय विभिन्न शैक्षणिक और अकादमिक समितियों में सक्रिय रहे। वे महाराष्ट्र सरकार के शिक्षा सलाहकार रहे, साथ ही वहाँ की पाठ्यपुस्तक चयन समिति के सदस्य भी रहे। अनेक वर्षों तक वे मराठवाड़ा विश्वविद्यालय में उर्दू, फ़ारसी और हिन्दी की बोर्ड ऑफ़ स्टडीज़ के तथा एस.एन.डी.टी. महिला विश्वविद्यालय, मुम्बई की बोर्ड ऑफ़ स्टडीज़ के भी सदस्य रहे। नियमित शिक्षक के रूप में अवकाश प्राप्ति के बाद 14 अक्तूबर 1985 को ‘भारतीय संस्कृति संस्थान’ नाम से एक ऐसी संस्था की स्थापना की, जो फ्रैंकफुर्त में भारत व भारतीय संस्कृति में रुचि रखने वालों को भारतीय भाषाओं तथा भारतीय संगीत एवं नृत्यकला का प्रशिक्षण दे रही है। इसका उद्घाटन वरिष्ठ साहित्यकार सच्चिदानन्द हीरानन्द वात्स्यायन 'अज्ञेय' ने किया था और स्थापना के बाद इसका संचालन सतत् चौदह वर्षों तक इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय एवं इनकी पत्नी हाइडी पांडेय ने अपने निजी स्तर पर किया। आरम्भ से ही पाण्डेय जी सामाजिक दृष्टि से एक जागरूक और सक्रिय व्यक्ति रहे हैं। उनकी विद्वत्ता, स्पष्टवादिता और खुली सोच के कारण ही वे अपने मुम्बई प्रवास के दिनों में ‘सैन्ट्रल बोर्ड ऑफ़ फिल्म सेंसर’ के मुम्बई पैनल के लगातार 9 वर्षों तक सदस्य रहे और अंग्रेज़ी और हिन्दी फिल्मों की कटाई-छँटाई करते रहे। इसके अलावा, डॉ. पाण्डेय भारत के राष्ट्रपति द्वारा दिए जाने वाले पुरस्कारों की निर्णायक समिति के सम्मानित सदस्य तथा आकाशवाणी के लोकप्रिय कार्यक्रम ‘विविध भारती’ की गीत चयन समिति के भी कई वर्षों तक सदस्य रह चुके हैं। 1959 में मुम्बई में डॉ. पाण्डेय ने ‘लोकसंस्कृति परिषद’ का गठन और प्रबंधन भी किया।

डॉ. इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय ने सैंकड़ों लेखों, पचासों कविताओं, कहानियों, व्यक्तिचित्रों आदि के माध्यम से अपनी राष्ट्रभाषा हिन्दी के भण्डार में अपना योगदान दिया है। उनका साहित्य अनेक पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में प्रकाशित होता रहा है। इनके अलावा, उन्होंने जो पुस्तकाकार साहित्य दिया है,उसकी सूची इस प्रकार है-

इनमें से कई पुस्तकों के पुनर्मुद्रण भी हो चुके हैं। इन पुस्तकों के अतिरिक्त अनेक अनुसंधान आलेख, पुस्तक समीक्षाएँ, रेडियो वार्ताएँ तथा साक्षात्कार हिन्दी, अंग्रेज़ी एवं रूमानियन भाषाओं में प्रकाशित हो चुके हैं। जर्मन भाषा में हिन्दी के तीन उपन्यासों, मृदुला गर्ग के ‘चित्तकोबरा’,मंजुल भगत के ‘अनारो’ तथा कृष्णा सोबती के ‘मित्रो मरजानी’ का अनुवाद भी डॉ. पाण्डेय ने अपनी सहधर्मिणी हाइडी के साथ मिलकर किया है। इन अनुवादों की जर्मनी के साहित्यिक क्षेत्र में बहुत प्रशंसा हुई है। इस दरम्यान एक विद्वान् डॉ. प्रभात ओझा ने डॉ. इन्दु प्रकाश पाण्डेय पर शोध प्रबन्ध लिखकर 2014 में गुरुकुल कांगडी विश्वविद्यालय से पी.एचडी. की उपाधि प्राप्त की है। उनका यह शोध-प्रबन्ध ‘शिवपुरी से श्वालबाख़ तक’ शीर्षक से हिन्दी बुक्स सेंटर, दिल्ली से प्रकाशित हो चुका है। नागार्जुन के 3 उपन्यासों पर डॉ. पाण्डे की एक आलोचनात्मक पुस्तक प्रकाशाधीन है।
विचारधारा
डॉ. पाण्डेय, अनेक अंतरराष्ट्रीय साहित्यिक एवं भाषा विज्ञान संबंधी सभाओं में सम्मिलित होते और उनमें अपने आलेख प्रस्तुत करते रहे हैं। इनमें से पी.ई.एन. की अनेक सभाएँ उल्लेखनीय हैं। मैक्सिको, बुखारेष्ट, हाइडेलबर्ग, ससेक्स, लाइडन इत्यादि नगरों में हुई यूरोपीय विद्वानों की सभाओं में भी वे प्राय: सम्मिलित होते रहे हैं। यूरोप, संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका तथा चीन के विश्वविद्यालयों के आमंत्रण पर भारतीय साहित्य एवं संस्कृति संबंधी व्याख्यानों के लिए डॉ. पाण्डेय उत्तरी गोलार्द्ध के लगभग सभी महानगरों की यात्राएँ कर चुके हैं। संसार के महत्वपूर्ण पूँजीवादी और समाजवादी देशों से उनका निकट का संबंध रहा है और वे हमेशा दोनों ही पद्धतियों के जागरूक आलोचक रहे हैं। उनका मानना है कि गाँधीजी के विचारों के अनुसार ही मानवता का स्वस्थ विकास संभव है। डॉ. पाण्डेय, भारतीय संस्कृति की रचनात्मक परम्परा पर पूर्ण आस्था रखते हुए भी किसी के भक्त नहीं है। उनका कहना हे कि “मैं किसी साहित्यिक, धार्मिक, सामाजिक या राजनैतिक विचारधारा का भक्त नहीं हूँ और ना ही भगवान के स्वरूप को ठीक-से समझ पाया हूँ। फिर भी स्वामी रामतीर्थ और रमण महर्षि का प्रशंसक हूँ और महात्मा गाँधी के विचारों से मुझे ऊर्जा मिलती है।” इस उम्र में भी डॉ. पाण्डेय भ्रमण में रुचि रखते हैं। यही शारीरिक रूप से उनकी सक्रियता का रहस्य है।
